Various Types of VLAN
technews
There are several types of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) that are commonly used in networking:
Port-based VLAN: A port-based VLAN is a VLAN that is assigned to a specific port on a network switch. Devices connected to that port are members of the VLAN and can communicate with each other as if they were on the same physical network.
Protocol-based VLAN: A protocol-based VLAN is a VLAN that is based on the type of network protocol being used, such as Ethernet or Internet Protocol (IP). Devices that use the same protocol can be assigned to the same VLAN and can communicate with each other.
MAC address-based VLAN: A MAC address-based VLAN is a VLAN that is based on the MAC address of a device. Devices with the same MAC address can be assigned to the same VLAN and can communicate with each other.
Tag-based VLAN: A tag-based VLAN is a VLAN that uses VLAN tags to identify the VLAN membership of a device. Devices with the same VLAN tag can be assigned to the same VLAN and can communicate with each other.
Voice VLAN: A voice VLAN is a VLAN that is specifically designed for carrying voice traffic, such as phone calls. Devices on a voice VLAN can communicate with each other using a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) protocol.
Management VLAN: A management VLAN is a VLAN that is used for network management purposes, such as configuring and monitoring network devices. Devices on a management VLAN are typically restricted to authorized personnel and are isolated from the rest of the network for security purposes.
